There's also some variation on this which might help -- it uses IE's
AlphaImageLoader filter
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms532969.aspx):

E.g.:

.myclass {
  background: none;
  filter :progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(sizingMethod=scale,
        src='http://path/to/my/png')

}
