[Plone-UI] Expand children itens in Navigation Portlet

This might be better off asked on the plone-users list, as it will require
programmatic changes not really covered under the umbrella of UI. The short
answer is you¹re going to have to customize the navigation code, which is
likely not a simple task.

Googling turned up this, though I don¹t know how helpful it is / applicable
to your version of Plone:
