As far as i know you can't do it through the plone groups interface, but
in the ZMI you can add users by name, so you don't have to be able to
select this. afaik this worked on zope2.7 with the latest GRUF, but i
can't garuantee anything.

btw: i think you're on the wrong list for this, there are much more
active general plone mailinglists.
