- adding images (e.g. for css-backgrounds). i manged to change existing
images within /portal_skins/plone_images. but when i want to add some via
the import/export-menue i am puzzeled as it seems these need to be
zexp-packaged. is this true, so how to do so? i read about an "import"
folder to place in the zope's root dir, but adding jpgs there lets the
import-file-pulldown empty as before.

If I'm understanding what you want to do, then you need only "add new..."
menu on right of page, near top, and add image. I suspect making a
directory just for these would improve organization. Then refer to these
images by url(...) in your CSS. Getting the URL right can be tricky, but
just visit the image and refer to the URL used to view it, play around you
should be able to find the right string for the CSS with a little trial and
error.

- adding further html content in order to achieve things like different
background-images on the left and on the right. i found some templates at
/portal_skins/plone_templates/ but these only descibe a part of what i
really see.

main_template.pt is the starting point, and you *can* get to these places in
there by customizing it, that's not considered best practice, but if you're
sure you don't want to create a theme I think this is your only choice.

- clean erasing of some elements. e.g. i don't need "portal-searchbox", how
to drop this one? for now i erased its content, but the element itself
remains.

That's easy; visit your site root, and append @@manage-viewlets to the URL.
It's self-explanatory.

Best of luck.
