[Setup] Newbie Registration/Log-in problems

Ok, I'm well and truly lost!

I have installed Zope 2.10.2 and Plone 2.9, tried registering but found that I keep getting an error message regarding my email address: '"

"We were unable to send your password to your email address: (10061, 'Connection refused').

I've tried various email addresses, to no avail. However, the page says I'm registered, so I try the 'reset password' function but, again, the system can't find my user name or email address. 

"Unable to send mail: Invalid email address: postmaster at localhost"

Similarly, I can't contact anyone via the Plone website. Even a clean registration yields the same error. 

What I find odd, though, is that when I run Plone, the front page says "Welcome to Plone" and underneath has "by XXX XXXXX" (my user name). I can't work out what on Earth is going on - it seems to know it's me but still asks me to log in to continue - which is impossible, no matter what I try.

I've checked my firewall but get the feeling I'm missing something crucial. Any ideas?
