I implemented my hack, updating .home every time Plone starts, and it
works nicely. Zope2 detects the actual path to each imported product
on startup anyway.

I guess if I have more than one machine pointing at my zeoserver then
I'd better be careful about installing each instance in the same
location... not that I will ever do this, with more cores than I know
what to do with on even a modest server.
