PloneQueueCatalog has nothing to do with catalog performance 
improvements except that it delays indexing of expensive indexes. Also 
collective.indexing is worth to be looked at.

There is practical solution available for doing a RDBMS based catalog.
There are several solution for alternative fulltext implementation like 
collective.solr.
