thanks, Jon; I reverted the last change and followed the procedure 
described in 
http://plone.org/documentation/how-to/adding-new-fields-to-smart-folders-search 
to add the fields to the catalog; it works fine.

I'm pretty excited with this and I'm about to finish.

now I only need to modify some templates and customize CompositePack views.
