 FWT vote +1.  I'd like to see #9271 and #9282 merged into this PLIP.
 Since 4.0 is a major release, I think this is the right time to break
 backwards compatibility and I think this could be a big win.  Maybe we can
 make an incremental mitigation of disruption to integrators by using
 layers or somesuch to make it easy to switch back to the old templates.
