My recommendations would also be to a) download plone on your local machine
and start playing with it and b) either learn CSS or find a CSS designer who
isn't afraid of getting their hands a little dirty.

I also found the Definitive Guide to Plone by Andy McKay very helpful. It's
slightly out of date, but not so much so that you can't make a dent in
Plone.

Plone has a big learning curve, but it's worth the pain. There are frequent
bootcamps which are highly recommended, too, so you're not out there alone.
