Hi Mike,

I think improving Plone's incoming email story by implementing an email-blog gateway would be a neat SOC project to work on. Email, IMO, is on its way to becoming obsolete (--thanks to 95% of all email traffic being spam--) and will eventually be replaced by technology based on Web feeds, probably based on Atom.

The idea would be to convert incoming email to a blog entry, either via Atom (preferred) or XML-RPC, and (potentially) convert new feed entries to outgoing email messages or notifications. The Plone email-blog gateway would offer a richer functionality than an email-only subscription list (such as mailman), as the user would be given a choice to:

1) read the feeds at a plone site
2) subscribe to a feed using her preferred feed reader (with a client-side app or Google Reader)
3) subscribe to a receive email notifications of new feeds by providing her email address

See slide 10 of the "Beyond Blogging" presentation given at the TriXML 2006 conference at:

HTH,
Kamal
