Personal experiences as a foreigner:
About a quarter of the machines I saw accepted debit cards with the
Maestro logo.
They prominently display that support.
I have to enter my pin twice. I have to enter my card twice.
Most machines I used had 25% success rate in reading my card, for a
single read.
So at times I was busy half an hour to withdraw money.
I withdrew money a lot of times. Only a single time the machine failed
and did not deliver money. I saw a withdrawal of money on my bank
account, the next day the money was back on my account.
Using the debit card is the best way to get Reais, you get a better
exchange rate than when you want to exchange your currency to reais.
I always pay in cash.

Best regards,

Patrick
