I believe TIM has one of the best prepaid data plans, called "Infinity
Pré": http://www.tim.com.br/se/para-voce/planos/pre-pago/-infinity-pre

You pay R$ 0,50 for each day you do download some bits. There's no
bandwidth limit but if you use more than 10MB per day you connection speed
downgrades itself to 2G. Unlimited SMS is provided in the same manner: if
you send just one SMS then you're charged R$ 0,50 and you can send as many
SMS as you can in that day.

Calls for other TIMs numbers are very cheap too: R$ 0,25 per call, even
across cities. If your friend doesn't have a TIM but a non-mobile number
you pay R$ 0,60 per call. If it's a non-TIM mobile prices are not as cheap
(ie: charges per minute).
